Project: RIPTA Parking lot

Location: Providence Map It

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority parking lot on Elmwood Ave. in Providence is the largest permeable pavement lot in New England and is designed to allow stormwater to seep slowly into the surrounding soils.

The lot covers 42,500 square feet and reduces runoff by an estimated 1 million gallons per year. Stormwater seeps through the pavement into a layer of crushed stone and then into the soil. The reduction of snow and ice cover from porous pavement has the potential to reduce salt treatment for RIPTA by 77 percent.
